Clear ceramic braces straighten teeth exactly the way traditional braces do, but with tooth-colored brackets that are much harder to spot. At Vibrant Orthodontics in Tallahassee, they are a popular choice for teens heading into high school photos, college applications and first jobs, and for adults who want to straighten their teeth without a mouthful of metal.

Every case is planned by Dr. Maryam Rezaie, who earned her DMD at the University of Florida and completed her orthodontic specialty training at Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics. Our office is at 1350 Thomaswood Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32308.

What Are Clear Ceramic Braces?

Ceramic braces use the same system as metal braces: a bracket is bonded to each tooth, and an archwire connects them to apply gentle, steady pressure. The difference is the bracket material. Instead of stainless steel, the brackets are made from a clear or tooth-colored ceramic that blends with the natural shade of the teeth. From conversational distance, most people will not notice them.

Because the mechanics are the same, ceramic braces can treat the same range of problems as traditional metal braces, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites and crossbites.

Clear Ceramic vs. Metal Braces

Factor Clear ceramic Traditional metal
Appearance Tooth-colored, discreet Silver, visible, color ties available
How they move teeth Brackets and archwire Brackets and archwire
Durability Strong, slightly more care needed Extremely durable
Staining Brackets resist stains; ties can pick up color from foods Not a concern
Popular with Older teens and adults Kids and younger teens

The short version: neither is better at straightening teeth. It comes down to how visible you want your braces to be and how careful you are willing to be with them.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Clear ceramic braces work well for most patients whose permanent teeth have come in. They tend to be the right fit for:

  • High school students who want a quieter look during their busiest social years.
  • Adults who are self-conscious about metal brackets at work. Ceramic brackets keep orthodontic treatment for adults low-profile in meetings and on video calls.
  • Patients who are diligent about care. Ceramic brackets are strong, but they reward good habits.

Younger kids who are rough on their braces, or who love picking bright colors, often do better with metal. For middle and high schoolers, ceramic is a common request when we plan braces for teens, and Dr. R will give you an honest recommendation at your consult.

Caring for Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces need the same basic care as metal: brush after meals, floss daily, and avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods. A few extra habits help them stay nearly invisible:

  • Rinse or brush after coffee, tea, dark sodas and curry, which can tint the elastic ties.
  • Skip biting directly into hard foods like apples and raw carrots; cut them into small pieces instead.
  • Wear a mouthguard for contact sports.

Expect some tenderness for the first few days after placement. Soft foods and orthodontic wax over any spot that rubs make that stretch much easier, and most patients settle in within a week or two.

What Treatment Looks Like

Treatment starts with a free consult and a digital scan using our iTero scanner, which captures a 3D model of your teeth in minutes. From there, Dr. R builds a plan with an estimated timeline. Many patients wear braces for about 18 to 24 months, though every case is different. After your braces come off, retainers protect the result.

The iTero scan is one example of the orthodontic technology we use to keep treatment precise and appointments efficient.

How Much Do Clear Braces Cost?

Every case is priced individually, because cost depends on the complexity of the bite and the expected length of treatment. At your free consult, we explain the total fee for your plan, how your insurance benefits apply and the simple monthly payment options available, all before you decide anything.

If you are comparing offices, ask each one how many clear ceramic cases they treat and what the plan is if a bracket chips. At Vibrant Orthodontics, repairs are handled promptly, and Dr. R will explain what to expect before treatment begins.

Clear Braces FAQ

Do ceramic braces take longer than metal braces?

Treatment time depends mainly on the complexity of the case, not the bracket material. Dr. R will give you an estimate for your specific case.

Will the brackets turn yellow?

The ceramic brackets themselves resist staining. The small elastic ties can pick up color from foods, but they are replaced at each adjustment visit.

Can kids get ceramic braces?

Sometimes. It depends on the child and the case. Many younger patients do best with metal, and we cover every option for braces for kids at the consult.

Do you offer clear aligners?

Our practice focuses on traditional braces, both metal and clear ceramic. Dr. R will explain the best braces option for your bite at the consult.

What if a ceramic bracket comes loose?

Call or text us. A loose bracket is rarely urgent, but if it is causing pain, we provide emergency orthodontic care for problems that cannot wait.
